NEW YORK – The Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. reports that it captured a greater share of trading in NYSE-listed stocks than the New York Stock Exchange, for the first time, on July 11.

That day, Nasdaq’s matched share volume for NYSE-listed securities reached 1.73 billion compared to 1.727 billion on the NYSE itself. In percentages of all NYSE-listed securities trading, Nasdaq accounted for 25.66 percent, while the NYSE accounted for 25.61 percent.

“There has been a sea change in how and where stocks trade, and this is a milestone that speaks to that trend,” says Chris Concannon, Executive Vice President, Transaction Services, Nasdaq OMX.

Nasdaq’s average daily matched volume in NYSE-listed securities in June was 1.06 billion shares, another record, and a 107 percent increase over June 2007. Nasdaq’s share of NYSE-listed securities trading in June was 23 percent, up from 15.9 percent in June 2007. According to Nasdaq, its matched market share in NYSE-listed securities has grown 15-fold from 64 million shares per day in June 2005 to 1.06 billion shares per day in June 2008.
